The shattering of Land Speed Record (LSR) by the North American Eagle will be the most watched sporting event of the 21st century. The spectacle of seeing a dedicated team of Canadian and American aerospace engineers and race car enthusiasts, who are volunteering without pay, reach uncharted heights and transcend new goals will give a lift and re-ignite the spirit of anyone following the event. And the goal? Traveling over 800 MPH on land and breaking the current Land Speed Record of 763 MPH that has been set for ten years.
This event will undoubtedly gain mass exposure for everyone involved, from Ed Shadle, the driver and co-owner of the North American Eagle, to title and participating sponsors. When ThrustSCC broke the record in 1997, one billion television impressions were measured along with 3.5 million internet hits. And that was in 1997, before the internet was as wide spread. It goes without saying that impressions generated through news coverage, TV news specials, talk shows, documentaries, newspapers and magazine articles, the internet, public appearances, merchandising, movie rights and merchandising, will be substantially higher ten years later.
The Discovery Channel has taken an interest in the North American Eagle project with their production of two documentaries entitled “Land Speed: Mach 1 and Beyond”, which is currently airing, and “Hyperspeed”, to be aired in the near future. Both productions highlight the excitement and the amazing technological advancements that allow the jet-car to accelerate to over 800 MPH, as well as the overwhelming struggles and successes involved in NAE’s chase of the land speed record.
The potential exposure associated with North American Eagle is virtually limitless. As the record breaking event approaches, the number of photos published and articles written on the topic will increase exponentially. This will be a fantastic opportunity for sponsors to have their logos prominently displayed on the car, the driver and crew’s uniforms, and on all NAE products.
And it doesn’t stop there. Even after North American Eagle captures the Land Speed Record publicity surrounding the car and the event will continue to flourish for years to come. After the ThrustSCC car broke the record in 1997, seven follow-up documentaries were produced and continue to air to this day.
Additionally, the ThrustSCC car was placed in the Museum of British Road Transport Coventry and where 300,000 people visit the exhibit annually. The sponsors of the team are still reaping the benefits of their investment ten years later!
